Cortona

Cortona is situated on a beautiful Tuscan hill overlooking the Val di Chiana, and is one of the most ancient Etruscan towns, crossed by innumerable medieval streets, and surrounded by the ancient Etruscan walls. It overlooks the valley with a magnificent 180 degree view which reaches Umbria and Monte Amiata, making see part of Lake Trasimeno, offering a truly unique view.

Cortona still preserves many remains of the Etruscan period, and boasts great Renaissance artists such as Luca Signorelli and Fra Angelico, and Baroque as Pietro di Cortona.

Its medieval buildings and narrow streets give the city a charming atmosphere. The Basilica of Santa Margherita and of Le Celle invite tourists to discover Cortona from above, offering a journey of art and faith, just a short walk from the historic center.

Outside the city, at the foot of the hill, are the Meloni I and II of Sodo, Etruscan tumulus tombs of the sixth century BC.

An event not to be missed is CortonAntiquaria, one of the most interesting exhibits antiques market nationwide. The event takes place every year in the eighteenth century Palazzo Vagnotti and Palazzo Casali, the last Saturday in August to the second Sunday in September.
